I’m dreaming of a casual job for Christmas

It’s the countdown to Christmas and many employers are still looking to fill extra roles over this busy period – which is good news if you are looking for a casual job.

If you are not sure what job might suit you, here are some ideas:

Retail assistant

Lots of retailers are looking for extra staff to cope with an influx of Christmas shoppers. It helps to have excellent people skills – many retailers are looking for the right personalities – although it does help if you’ve had some experience. An interest in the product being sold can also go a long way.

Some places to consider are larger retailers such as Kmart, Target and Big W or speciality shops such as electronics stores, fashion stores, or food retailers. If you lack sales experience, you could always apply as a greeter or to work in the stockroom.

Picker-packer

From people shopping online for gifts, or stocking up on groceries, there are plenty of jobs for picker-packers across the entire retail spectrum. Most do not require any skills beyond an ability to identify a product from its order number or description, and the physical ability to pack them.

Delivery driver

Once the orders are packed, they need to be delivered and many courier companies are taking on extra drivers over this period. Potential employees need to be able to drive, understand and follow road directions and hand-deliver packages from their vehicles to the letterbox or door.

Hospitality

Lots of Christmas parties means lots of extra staff needed to cater to them. From wait staff and bar staff to kitchenhands, there are plenty of casual hospitality jobs that do not require a lot of skill or previous experience.

Santa Claus and his helpers

If you are an outgoing person who is great with children, dressing up as Santa or one of his helpers could be the right Christmas job for you. Or, if your passion is photography, perhaps you might apply for a job behind the camera or operating the photo processing machine.

Gift wrapper

If you are good with your hands, this could be a job for you – more and more people are turning to giftwrapping services in major shopping centres rather than wrangle with the sticky tape and gift paper themselves. People skills are handy.

Australia Post

Australia Post always takes on extra staff in the lead-up to Christmas. While applications have closed this year, it is something to keep in mind next year. While some roles require a forklift, truck or motorcycle licence, each year Australia Post also needs to fill roles in parcel and mail processing and customer service which require no experience or previous skills – and in many cases are suitable for people with varying levels of ability.
