Empowering Australians – Brett’s Journey with Deadly Pathways
The Deadly Pathways program, aimed at empowering Indigenous Australians through career development and life skills, has been a transformative experience for Brett. This program, which emphasises personal growth, leadership, and goal-setting, encourages participants to step out of their comfort zones and identify pathways toward fulfilling careers.
“I’ve always wanted to work with young people in my community, especially Indigenous youth, to help them navigate challenges and find their strengths,” Brett said. “Before the program, I wasn’t sure how to take the first step. Deadly Pathways gave me the tools, the confidence, and the push to set clear employment goals and start my journey.”
Throughout the program, Brett attended workshops on resume writing, interview techniques, and career planning, which helped her refine her vision for her future. One of the highlights was the leadership and personal development modules, where Brett gained valuable insights into self-awareness and building resilience.
“The program really encouraged me to push past my doubts,” she said. “I’ve learned how to advocate for myself and set realistic goals. Now, I’m ready to take the next step and pursue opportunities in the youth services sector. My Job Coach has helped me work through the steps needed to enroll in my Certificate IV in Youth and Family Intervention, which will hopefully lead to me securing my dream job in Youth Work.”
Brett’s dream of becoming an Indigenous youth worker is driven by her passion for her community and her own life experiences. She hopes to be a role model and provide support to young people facing similar struggles she has overcome.
Since completing the program, Brett has started exploring volunteer and internship opportunities in local youth organisations, including a three-day program with the local youth group ‘YourMob’. She plans to further her studies in community services and hopes to eventually work for an Indigenous-led youth program in the region.
The team at AimBig recognised that one of the key barriers to her gaining employment in the past had been access to transport. To help her overcome this, AimBig connected her to an Indigenous-owned driving school which enabled her to access and complete culturally-sensitive driving lessons. This will ultimately open up employment opportunities for Brett as she gains independence and transport access to future career opportunities.
The Deadly Pathways program has had a significant impact on Brett’s journey, and she is now more determined than ever to make a difference. “It’s about creating a future where our young people feel supported and proud of who they are,” she said. “This is just the beginning of my journey, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
Brett’s story is a shining example of how programs like Deadly Pathways can empower individuals to step outside their comfort zones, pursue their dreams, and create lasting change in their communities. Her determination and vision for the future inspire others to take bold steps toward their goals, knowing that with the right support, anything is possible.
