A Job Coaches Guide to Cover Letters

In the job seeking process, a cover letter can often be a second thought about in comparison to a resume. However, cover letters are just as important. With a cover letter, you can introduce yourself to an employer and let them know why you’re a match for the job you’re applying for. It puts a personality behind the resume, and is useful in standing out amongst other candidates.

Cover letters can be tricky, and a google search with a million results can make it even trickier to know what to include and leave out. How do you know what employers are really looking for in a cover letter?

Look no further – we’ve asked our AimBig Employment team for their insights on what makes a great cover letter. Our job coaches are highly skilled and have built meaningful connections with businesses and employers in their local areas, giving them a unique insight for what employers are thinking when recruiting.

“People often look at cover letters with the common objection… ‘I don’t know what to say’.  I recommend you write it as if you were in front of the recruiter introducing yourself. Say what you’ve done, why you’d be great in the role addressing any selection criteria, confirm your availability and use the recruiter’s name… yes, go to the trouble of finding out who will be reading it if it’s not obvious in the advertisement. “ Jacklyn Collins – Job Coach.

“Tailor a cover letter to the job you are applying for, not a generic cover letter. This will make you stand out!“ – Ross Rosenblum – Job Coach.

“My tip for cover letters is ensure that you highlight your key experiences from your resume and expand.” Nathan Ryan – Job Coach.

“Add a bit of passion about the role, it’s ok to also show a bit about yourself as well as addressing the selection criteria and requirements.” – Ebony Meyn, Job Coach.

“Make it memorable, showcase why you are the best candidate by addressing the criteria BUT make in your own style. Do not make it generic!”. – Ian Luteru, Business Development Manager
